Tadeusz Kościuszko (born February 4, 1746, Mereczowszczyzna, Poland [now in Belarus]—died October 15, 1817, Solothurn, Switzerland) was a Polish army officer and statesman who gained fame both for his role in the American Revolution and for his leadership of a national insurrection in his homeland. [4][5][6][7][8] He fought in the Polish–Lithuanian Commo On November 14, Kościuszko led a skirmish outside Charleston, South Carolina, one of the last military skirmishes of the American Revolutionary War. His contributions to the Continental Army, as well as to his native Poland, made Kosciuszko one of the great champions of liberty during the eighteenth century. He was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, with whom he shared ideals on human rights and freedom. In 1798 Congress granted $18,912 in back-pay to Kosciuszko for his role in the Revolutionary War. After nine years away from his homeland, Thaddeus Kościuszko returned to Poland in September 1784. Kosciuszko endeared himself to this country during the American Revolution and later gained even greater recognition in defense of his native Poland. Kościuszko was an advocate for the rights of serfs and sought to end serfdom in Poland.
